A discussion with <strong>Sylvie Kauffmann</strong> (Editor-in-Chief, Le Monde, France),  <strong>Abdel-Moniem Said</strong> (Chairman of the Board, Al-Ahram group, Egypt), <strong>Jeff Reifman</strong> ( Founder, NewsCloud, USA), and <strong>Francisco Amaral</strong> (Director, Cases I Associats, Spain) took place during the <a href="http://www.wefhamburg2010.com">2010 World Editors Forum in Hamburg</a>.<span id="more-2696"></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The moderator was <strong>Malte von Trotha</strong>, CEO, DPA News Agency, Germany.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Newspaper content will dramatically change in the upcoming years. A British editor said a few years ago that newspapers were becoming &#8220;viewspapers&#8221; with more opinions and editorial pieces. But in fact, almost all articles and stories must be written differently because we can assume that readers already know the basic news.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Sylvie Kaufmann</strong>, first female editor in chief in France, pointed out three major issues that could be the receipt for newspublishers&#8217; struggles:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>control costs</li>
<li>embracing new ways in journalism</li>
<li>belief in the publishing business</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">20 years ago there were only newspapers vs other newspapers. Today newspapers compete with internet which is widely understood as a mixture of different platforms and startups. Every single online player is the basic competitor to the newpspaper publishers.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The problem is  not within the platforms, it is all about the content. Platforms are only new ways of distribution to different targets, the challenge is to find the right content for the right niche. The challenge is also to organize the newsroom to be adopted to the new reality. Le Monde tries to combine online and print in all possible ways. They are the forces that strengthen one another.</div>
<div></div>
<div>The webteam of Le Monde is not integrated, they are only in the same building. Joint editorial meetings of online and print team help get maximum impact for each platform.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong>Abdel-Moniem Said</strong> said that the main objective for newsmedia publishers should be to think how to transform journalism to work better in terms of knowledge. Changing people is most difficult in the transformation era. If people are used to traditional journalism, have been working in that for years, it is the most hardest work &#8211; to change their mentality and perception of journalism in the new media age.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Al-Ahram was established in 1875, and is the largest newspaper in terms of circulation in Egypt. In 1950, the Middle East Institute described Al Ahram as  being as important to Arabic public as &#8220;London Times to Englishmen and the New York Times to Americans&#8221;.</div>
<div></div>
<div>There were many platforms of communication and distribution in history. It all started with the word, then there were:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>holy and sacred books</li>
<li>books</li>
<li>press</li>
<li>radio/tv</li>
<li>satellites and internet &amp; digital publication</li>
</ul>
</div>
<p>Every shift to a new platform followed discussions. And hopefully, with every next shift there will be debates as well..</p>
<div id="_mcePaste">Al-Ahram&#8217;s approach is about a path of communication, which should not be forgotten as a mission of journalism nowadays. <strong>Data helps gather information, information leads to knowledge, knowledge should be transformed into widom.</strong></div>
<div>In order to do go through the transformation correctly, money is needed. Money, that can be collected by empowering the resources avery news publisher has:</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
<ul>
<li>advertising</li>
<li>circulation</li>
<li>printing</li>
<li>investments</li>
</ul>
</div>
<p>Only then the news publisher can be turned to a fully operating media company. The platforms of distribution are for Al Ahram outlets only: print, online, radio/tv, mobile, and e-readers. Different outlets with different readers, different generations. Those who read newspapers in the morning are not necessarily the same as the ones who read all the news online. 94% of Al Ahram media consumption is between 9 and 12AM.</p>
<div id="_mcePaste">The heart of the entire operation is the newsroom that is convergent for the outlets: virtual (online, mobile, games), print, and broadcast (radio, video) In order to fully transform, these implementation steps were needed:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>human resources</li>
<li>newsroom physical/logical reconstruction</li>
<li>training (Al Ahram Press Training Institution)</li>
<li>empowering IT capabilities</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong>Jeff Reifman</strong> defined journalism in a short way: journalism is telling stories and interesting as many people as possible. If yesterday journalism is not what readers expect, the sollution is simple &#8211; change that.</div>
<div></div>
<div>NewsCloud is a tool, that could be used well by publishers. It is about hosting a community pages where users can interact with one another. It is not entertainment, as opposed to some social media tools out there. Since journalism has a significant problem with its business model, Newscloud shows there is a way togenerate revenue by making people interact around one brand.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div>Newscloud&#8217;s Facebook application platform is an app for crowdsourcing and audience engaging. It provides a space for readers to interact with the organisation and each other. It conteins interactive features to add value to the community inside and outside the news cycle. By working as a Facebook application, it has the Facebook authentication tool, so the publishers know exactly who their readers are.</div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong>Francisco Amaral</strong> showed a couple of examples of Spanish, Brazilian and Prtuguese newspapers that managed to break away from the traditional &#8220;he said yesterday journalism&#8221;. Many of these titles needed something more than news, they needed opinion and analysis.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div>Newspaper publishers should be thinking that way: fact makes a story, and story should attract the readers. It&#8217;s not only relevance that make the story interesting. News publishers should think first with their targets.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Each paper should look for a model that suits its values  and its business structure. But every newspaper, no matter what its business model is, has to define the reader.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Newspapers that are successful:</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
<ul>
<li>have clearly defined values</li>
<li>know their audience</li>
<li>are newsy</li>
<li>have talented staff</li>
<li>respect the time</li>
</ul>
</div>

Tom Jozefacki opened the conference on behalf of OPA Europe. This is the second conference co-organised by two associations: INMA and OPA.<span id="more-2428"></span></div>
<div>Last year in Liverpool, the conference was about how the future will look like. This year it focuses on innovation, inspiration and transformation. Tom Jozefacki brought a small trivia about the host town of this year&#8217;s conference &#8211; except for its tradition, Kraków is also a very young city, full of universities with students. Two leading portals in Poland (onet.pl and wp.pl) have their headquarters here. Also companies such as IBM and Google chose Kraków for their Polish offices.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">After the short introduction, Tom Jozefacki introduced Adam Michnik, the editor in chief of Gazeta Wyborcza.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">At first, Adam Michnik gave a brief history of Gazeta Wyborcza which was created by the people from the underground and opposition. For 20 years it has been the best read opinion daily in Poland Gazeta Wyborcza is based on its mission &#8211; its mission 20 years ago was to fight for the freedom of every single person in Poland. At the same time, 20 years ago it was understood that fighting from underground was something totally different to being a market player in free economy.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Gazeta Wyborcza has always wanted to be the voice and the part of the democracy movement, but not an institution. They knew that mission without a business plan has no chance to survice.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Few questions were asked: what threats are there since the Soviet Union&#8217;s influence on Poland&#8217;s market was removed. Two threats for media in every democracy were recognized.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">One threat is the Russian model, which is the slow suffocation of free media. Adam Michnik called it the Putinism &#8211; first giving the media such strong financial pressure they would hardly survive to later subordinate to the government.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Second threat is the Italian model, close to Berlusconi. It is a way to subordinate the media on the financial level to use them in the political campaign after all.</div>
<div></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The question asked today by the editors is how to face two types of crisis. First, that was born in the banking sector and spreaded all over the global economy. Second problem is the Internet. The editors are proud of the fact that more and more young people read information, but must admit that Iternet is a serious threat to the newspapers.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Adam Michnik concluded his entrance speech by saying that independent newspapers are the wine and blood of democracy.</div>

Mr. Asselin will be one of the speakers during the <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/">INMA&#8217;s conference in Kraków this September</a>.<span id="more-2341"></span></p>
<p>Two years ago in Vienna, <strong>Bernard Asselin</strong> spoke about the case of &#8220;Words Matter&#8221; marketing campaign which reached its goal by changing the perception of the newspaper. After this campaign, &#8220;The Gazette&#8221; was perceived as being more innovative, and less conservative (<a href="http://forum4editors.com/2008/10/how-to-change-our-newspapers-image/">read more about this campaign</a>).</p>
<p><a href="http://forum4editors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/bernard-278x290.jpg" rel="lightbox[2341]"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2343" title="Bernard Asselin" src="http://forum4editors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/bernard-278x290.jpg" alt="" width="278" height="290" /></a></p>
<p>This year in Kraków, B<strong>ernard Asselin</strong> will participate in the discussion about how to attract and quantify total audience across platforms. Before that, he answered some of our questions:</p>
<p><strong>Forum4Editors: How does the editorial office of “The Gazette” cooperate with its advertising department?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Bernard Asselin:</strong> In the past years we have eliminated the silos not only between advertising and Editorial but also between Advertising, Editorial and Marketing. Every important project is now driven by a joint team composed of representatives of these departments. As long as everyone respects each other and understands the limitations, we have had tremendous success with different projects. And it’s more fun!</p>
<p><strong>Would you give any advice to the marketeers about what they should or should not do in order to cooperate fully with the editorial office?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Bernard Asselin:</strong> Marketing should be able to show Editorial how they can benefit from their expertise because at the end of the day, the goals are the same: More readers, More revenues.<br />
One of the most successful initiatives I have done at The Gazette was to meet every section Editors and ask them simple questions like:<br />
1. You often have to take Editorial decisions, what would you like to know about your readers habits?<br />
2. How do you think you can improve your sections?<br />
3. What keeps you awake at night?<br />
With all their concerns and ideas, we created a questionnaire and asked our 2,000 online panelists and in some cases we held Focus groups with readers and invited journalists to listen to the comments behind the one-way mirror! It worked so well that now consumer research is part of our culture!<br />
Secondly, to have the Editorial people involved in the creative process of campaigns helps them understanding marketing and appreciating the effort made to support in most cases… their work!</p>
<p><strong>The Gazette is well known for very creative campaigns and ideas of promoting the paper and its content. What’s next, what do you have in stock for the next couple of months?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Bernard Asselin:</strong> It’s a secret but I will tell you that we are finalizing a 2nd generation of our Words matters campaign. The ultimate convergence of the brand, words and content. More to come…</p>
<p><strong>What is the future of advertising in print and online? Can the drop in print circulation be replaced by the rise in price of print advertising? Will the inefficient advertising online be replaced by advertising on tablets?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Bernard Asselin:</strong> The future of advertising is linked to the media consumers’ habits. Our challenge is to deliver the most efficient campaigns that will create results to our advertisers and we need to have all these tools in our toolbox for our clients to keep the maximum share of their ad budget. Print and online are only two platforms because we must be ready to become advertising solutions experts on the iPad, mobile, SMS, database and whatever new technology we’ll see. Revenue is a challenge but with the increased competition, keeping the relationship with the clients is even more challenging. At The Gazette, we already switched our focus from selling ad space to selling solutions and our sales force is already been selling multiple platforms for more than two years.</p>
<p><strong>Thank you very much</strong></p>
<p>Bernard Asselin will be one of the guest of <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/">this year&#8217;s INMA/OPA European conference in Kraków</a>. Make sure you read <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/index.cfm?action=programme">the conference programme</a>.</p>

On September 29th, the <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/index.cfm?action=home" target="_blank">INMA/OPA Europe Conference</a> will be organized in Kraków, Poland. Many speakers already confirmed their attendence with David Montgomery, CEO of Mecom Group among them.<span id="more-2189"></span>The programme of this year&#8217;s INMA/OPA Europe Conference is almost ready, and, like in the past years, it&#8217;s very promising! As a regular attendee I must admit that these conferences are a must-attend event for every media professional.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a closer look at the <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/index.cfm?action=programme">programme</a>. This September, Kraków will host  executives from big newsmedia companies such as: M<strong>ecom Group, Johnston Press, Agora, Schibsted, De Persgroep</strong>, and many many others. David Montgomery (Mecom) together with Kalle Jungkvist (Schibsted) and Shailesh Gupta (Dainik Jagran, one of the largest dailies in India &#8211; 2,2 million paid circulation, 55,7 million readers daily reach) will speak abou<strong>t marketing solutions to grow audience and advertising revenue in newsmedia companies</strong>. Bernard Asselin (&#8220;The Gazette&#8221;, Canada), Griet Ducatteeuw (Corelio, Belgium), and Wanja Oberhof (Niiu, Germany) will participate in a session dedicated to ideas of <strong>how to attract and quantify total audience across different platforms</strong>. Also advertising strategists will find inspiring ideas for their everyday work. Latest trends concerning tablets, e-readers, kindles, iPads will also be analyzed &#8211; are they a new hype or a great opportunity for newsmedia companies? This, plus quick overview of greatest hypes from the past 7 years will surely gain a lot of interest.</p>
<p><a href="http://forum4editors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/10EuroConfHead.jpg" rel="lightbox[2189]"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2192" title="10EuroConfHead" src="http://forum4editors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/10EuroConfHead-290x94.jpg" alt="" width="290" height="94" /></a></p>
<p>Not only great discussion topics and lectures make INMA Outlook 2011 worth attending. During the three day conference additional events are planned as well. One of them will be the <strong>gala dinner at the Salt Mines of Wieliczka — 125 meters below ground</strong>.</p>
<p>In case all of the above does not convince you yet to sign up for this conference, take a look at the presentation embedded below, and <a href="http://www.inma.org/modules/event/2010Krakow/index.cfm?action=programme" target="_blank">check back the programme of the conference</a> which surely will be extended with the names of the special guests. Make sure you <a href="https://invento.wufoo.com/forms/krakow-conference-hotel-registration-form/" target="_blank">sign up for the INMA/OPA Europe Conference</a>, and <strong>see you in Kraków!</strong></p>
