Are iPad and tablet devices a revolution for the publishing industry?
On May 18th in Oxford, during the INMA’s and Innovation Media Group’s tablet summit, Juan Antonio Giner will present his view on what do the tablets mean for newspapers and how those digital platforms will influence the publishing market. Just a week before the conference, Juan Giner agreed to answer some questions for Forum4Editors.
Forum4Editors: What does iPad mean for newspaper publishers?
Juan Antonio Giner: The new tablets are the best way to expand the reach of their publications: these new mobile internet devices are a great opportunity to develop new multimedia narratives, and to engage our newsrooms in a very creative news operations that will bring more readers, audiences and communities to our traditional print products.
Is there any room for the print newspaper in the iPad era?
Yes, the future will bring a mix of platforms, languages and technologies, so print will become “haute couture”, a premium medium. Our print brands will benefit of these new products.
Where is the money in iPads for newspaper publishers?
Reaching new readers, audiences, communities and advertisers will be an excellent proposition for all of them. Money will follow the impact and reach of these tablets where localization and personalization are key factors.
None of the tablet devices has such marketing (including the word of mouth marketing) as iPad does. Does this mean iPad is an ultimate device and the only future so far for newspapers?
No, iPad is leading the revolution but there will be plenty of space for more tablets. At the same time let’s remember that the first iPads are just the beginning of a more sophisticated platform, that will end in flexible devices or in what INNOVATION call the future digital rubber paper.
Thank you very much.
Tablets and iPad are a new platform, which requires mastering and producing new digital narratives. The iPad and tablets require a new journalistic grammar, new workflows, and innovative storytelling techniques. To learn about those, make sure you join the
